Lin Xiawei & Rebecca Zhu - Endure The Real World Away From Home
Lin Xiawei and Rebecca Zhu are both artists from Mainland. Looking back, the girls came to HK alone to develop their acting career. They didn't know how to speak Cantonese or have a friend who they could talk about anything to. They came to HK to endure through the real world alone.
Rebecca: My first impression on you was when you first entered the industry, I watched you on TV in a skincare commercial. You were dressed all white, looking so pure. I thought you looked very friendly and gentle. After getting to know you, I realized you are actually quite positive and funny.
Lin Xiawei: Back then when you were running for Miss HK, I watched the show too. My family and I guessed you would be the winner. At the time, I thought you had temperament, you are a wise girl and knew how to dance too. I personally admire girls with a dance background. I later met you in the makeup room, I thought you were someone good to chat with.
Rebecca: At first, I thought you spoke Cantonese, but unexpectedly we started speaking Mandarin instead. You gave me a very close feeling.
Lin Xiawei: You are quite a silly girl, have so much to say and always happy. I came to HK myself for work, I was in theatre for a little over a year, but didn't know much about the HK culture. I didn't really know how to speak Cantonese, but then later I learned more from working with other colleagues.
Rebecca: I'm still bad at it. How come you are so good? In the past, any foreign or HK friends I had, they would accommodate me and speak Mandarin to me. When I was running for Miss HK, I didn't even have the courage to say my own name. After entering TVB, I really had the chance to really learn Cantonese.
Take 1: Villain Role, Gets Yelled At
Lin Xiawei: The greatest difficulty I had was I am a stage actress turned TV actress. I have to put away my exaggerating expressions and really memorize the scripts.
Rebecca: You are very natural in your acting. My first series Silver Spoons, Sterling Shackles, was really stressful. I had huge problem with the language and too many scenes. The producer said, to a newcomer it is difficult, especially memorizing my lines. They all feared I would be nervous, so they give me light pointers. They feared if they said too much, it would stress me out. Have you portrayed a role and got scolded at before?
Lin Xiawei: Yes! In Missing You, people thought I was the third party, but Linda Chung was actually the third party. In The Days of Days, I had a sassy role and I tried my best not to make people dislike my role. Actually its good to have balance. Just do your own part, others might not like it and some will have bad intentions. You must know how to distinguish.
Rebecca: Sometimes I wonder if I'm too stubborn. When people scold you, their words can be too over, but now I understand the reality of this world, have to learn to let go.
Take 2: Kenneth Ma Rumor, Treat it like Promotion
Lin Xiawei: What do you think about rumors? We don't really have much. My most classic one was with Benjamin Yuen! But he had a girlfriend! The media wrote it as if I was the third party. At the time, I really felt unhappy and really understood, this is how the entertainment circle is like.
Rebecca: I don't have that many rumors. I have never dated Clayton Li. We never started, how could we break up? Kenneth Ma's rumor was fake too, but then I'm also afraid of saying something wrong and offending his fans. He's a seun poon!
Lin Xiawei: So, how is your ideal partner like?
Rebecca: Filial to his family, otherwise he won't love you either. His looks must be ok. Nowadays, women better off having money themselves then to rely on others. Have more security!
Lin Xiawei: You're right. Filial piety is very important. I don't have any other special requirement. Women must rely on themselves. Don't lose her career, having money or not is just secondary. The most important is to treat my family and I well. An artist being in a relationship is very stressful. A partner in the industry is very troublesome, but someone outside of the industry is also difficult. We definitely won't be able to hold hands. After work, I get so tired. If I had time, I would want to sleep. Any holidays, I want to go back to Xiamen to visit my family.
Rebecca: Especially in HK. If your other half is outside of industry, its stressful too. Afterall we are public figures, its quite harsh, so gotta really think about it first!
Lin Xiawei: Any guy you go out with is your boyfriend.
Take 3: Mention Raymond Lam, Feel Pressured
Rebecca: You have a cousin Raymond Lam, does he give you more pressure?
Lin Xiawei: At first, he helped me, but later it turned into invisible pressure. I cannot avoid it. There will be people who think I rely on him. Actually I studied performing arts myself, I'm not sure how long this time period will last, but I'm doing a lot better now. The audience is starting to like my roles. I personally like to give myself pressure. I get anxious. No matter how many scripts I have to read, I will finish it all before I go to sleep. I have to work even harder and put in double the effort as others. (Enjoy your brother [Raymond] dating?) As long as he's happy. He isn't young anymore.
Rebecca: Artists are normal people too, they have a life.
Lin Xiawei: Its hard to find someone you really like. He had always been a very attentive guy, family-oriented and I'm happy for him.
